ECCO
Italy & Greece | 2025 Here it is. Then and now. Written and Images by John Hendrick
In 2002, I lived in Italy for over two years, stationed just outside Naples. It became home for a brief period of my life, a place experienced through duty, routine, friendships, and the ordinary rhythms that eventually make somewhere feel familiar.
In 2025, I went back.
This time, I returned with my family. To streets I remembered, places I didn't, and a version of Italy that had continued changing long after I left.
Greece came next, a place I had wanted to experience for decades, but had no memories to return to.
Somewhere between the two was ECCO.
A Return to Stillness
ECCO is a word you hear often in Italian. “Here it is.” A signal of arrival, of offering, of presence.
Over time, that became less a title and more a way of understanding the trip.
I stopped looking for photographs everywhere I went. When a frame felt forced, I let it go. I sat. I drank coffee. I watched people pass. Sometimes the photograph came. Sometimes it didn't.
And that was enough.
The work became a record of those moments, of light, movement, silence, and the space between looking and seeing.
THEN AND NOW
Returning wasn't about retracing the past.
I was walking familiar places differently. Watching my daughter play along the Amalfi Coast where I once stood in uniform. Streets I remembered were changed. Others felt strangely untouched.
There were moments when memory arrived before recognition, a corner, a sound, the pace of a morning.
Then came Greece.
There was nothing to remember there. No younger version of myself to encounter. I was seeing it for the first time, hearing a language I didn't understand and trying to read faces before words.
One place asked me to remember.
The other asked me simply to look.
That, to me, is ECCO.
